Native Frangipani - Hymenosporum flavum
An absolutely stunning tree, and one of our own! The Native Frangipani is native to most of the East Coast of Australia, from Sydney to Cape York, and also PNG.
Depending on where this tree grows, it usually grows to around 10m in warm/tropical areas of the country, smaller in cooler areas. Foliage is beautiful, glossy deep green up to 15cm long, and flowers are formed in spring.
The whole canopy of the tree is covered in sweetly fragrant and yellowy cream flowers which age to a deep orange, and are borne throughout spring & early summer.
How to grow the Native Frangipani Tree
This is one of THE must-have native plants of Australia, it is tough, suited to our conditions, and can even handle some frost! Full sun and drought are no match for this beauty, both are tolerated well; in fact, this Frangipani actually prefers growing in an open, full sun position. It will also grow in part shade. It is however best grown in rich, organic soil, and better growth rates will be achieved with regular watering.
Prune to shape regularly to promote masses of flowers, and plant it close to your house to enjoy the fragrance!
