The Bird of Paradise is a stunning plant; it has a uniquely shaped flower which resembles a bird’s head (A Bird-of-Paradise...). Flowers are orange and blue and flower most of the year. The warmer the climate, the more they will bloom. It has paddle shaped leathery leaves that are aprox 20cm long and 15cm wide. It forms great clumps of over a meter wide, up to 2 meters high.

A gorgeous little ground cover plant, with delightful little pink flowers and thin strap like foliage. They flower several times a year, usually after a rain, earning them the common name of 'rain lily' or 'pink rain lily'. This Lily grows from little bulbs, which can be divided and planted elsewhere in the garden. Zephyranthes is best planted in groups or clumps for maximum effect, as they are quite delicate and can get lost in amongst other plants. However, I do love using these Lilies scattered around the garden, and it always sparks comments from visitors, 'what is that beautiful little flower?

Agapanthus Orientalis Blue (Blue African Lily) is a stunning garden plant which originates in South Africa. It has beautiful bright green, slim leaves and a tall flower stalk. Flowers are pendulous and light blue and are borne in a cluster on top of the flower stalk, providing a wonderful display of colour. Sometimes they can be dark blue or white also. Agapanthus africanus is best grown in well draining soil, in the garden or pots. Soil should be a sandy mix which does not get water logged, and is slightly acidic. Fertilise regularly with a slow release fertiliser. Best flowering is achieved when it is pot bound – this is an excellent container plant!

This is a wonderful little groundcover from South Africa. It has succulent, thick green leaves which are covered in Leopard spots. The spots are a dark green to almost black, and the colour tends to be enhanced (e.g. darker spots on the foliage) in a shady spot.

Canna indica is a very nice tropical plant with bright green, lush foliage and flowers which are carried on tall stalks. This Canna grows to around 1m tall, with flower spikes up to 1.5m. They are beautiful in between your other foliage and flowering plants in the garden, providing bulk and colour when in flower.
Cardboard Palm (Zamia furfuracea) Member of the Cycad family (Cycad is Greek for ‘palm’, as most Cycads bear resemblance to palms). It is native to the warm sandy coastal plains of Mexico. It’s a very distinctive cycad with thick, felty leaves up to 1.2m long that emerge from the middle of the plant, forming a rosette. When grown in bright light, the rosette becomes a 1m high clump of tightly overlapping that can (although slowly) grow to 1.8m in diameter. Lady Palms are very elegant, graceful multi stemmed palms, growing to around 3-4 meters tall. They are often called ‘Bamboo palm’ due to the coarse, fibrous material with which the canes are covered. Lady Palm has deep green, glossy leaves; stems can be covered in brown fibres. Rhapis excelsa is easy to grow, being adaptable to a wide range of conditions and soil types. Liriope is a beautiful, evergreen grassy type ground cover. It bears gorgeous little purple flowers and grows to 50-70cm tall, and 50cm wide. The strappy leaves are dark green, glossy and narrow. Liriope, or Turf Lily is very tough and adaptable. It thrives without care in almost any garden. It is well suited to growing in pots, as a ground cover or as a border around a garden. Liriope is also often used as a lawn substitute, it doesn’t require anywhere near as much water as the lawn does to look good! The Australian Fan Palm is one of Australia's most beautiful native palms. It originates from the North Queensland Rainforests, from north of Townsville to Cape York. The Australian Fan Palm has very large round fan leaves and is best grown in a shady spot. Leaves will be greener in deeper shade but does need some light to grow. It is grown as an ornamental plant because of its extraordinary colourful funnel-shaped flowers, which grow in clumps in an upright position. The flowers have white and pink perianths with yellow labella with red stripes and spots. There is one pistil and three stamens, but only one of the stamen has pollen. The fruit is rounded with many striations.
It is called the 'Shell Ginger' or 'Shell Flower' because of each individual flower having a strong resemblance to sea shells, particularly when in bud. Its leaves are often used for herbal tea which has hypotensive, diurectic and antiulcerogenic properties. They are also used for flavouring noodles and to wrap rice cakes. It is a low growing palm, which normally grows up to about 1 meter, but can grow up to 2,5 max. It typically has no more than 10 leaves, but it can live up to 400 years old. Sabal Minor has a short trunk (up 30cm in diameter), but usually appears trunkless due to its subterranean trunk which actually grows down into the soil. It has blue green costa palmate leaves (‘stiff shredded fan shaped leaves’).

It bears beautiful, highly fragrant cream flowers during many months of the year. Michelia coco grows to around 4m tall and 6m wide. It is frost hardy surviving temperatures of up to -9. It is best grown in full sun to part shade with excellent drainage and responds well to watering, mulching and fertilizing. Spiral Ginger is a perennial native to Mexico. This Ginger never looks ratty like some other plants might in winter - it's lush, green and beautiful! The spiral ginger is a hardy vigorous growing ginger to 2m tall, with thin red spotted stems. Flowers are very nice, yellow with red stripes. It flowers throughout spring and summer, and flowers are edible; they are often added to salads.The Spiral Ginger is best grown in part shade to part sun, but will grow well in full sun with adequate water. Mine are in full sun and they are my most lushious looking plant. The perfect backdrop for other flower plants, and perfect protection also as they grow incredibly fast. Costus pictus will grow in containers or in the ground in moist well drained rich soil.

One of our favourites! A beautiful tree from the Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia) family which produces big banana-like foliage. Foliage arranges itself in a fan-shaped form. Though technically not a palm tree, it is often called one because of the short palm-like trunk & foliage. It grows 7-15m tall. The Travellers Palm produces white flowers, followed by brown fruits. Seeds are a wonderful blue colour. It derives its name ‘Travellers Palm’ from the fact that it collects and holds rainwater in its leaf folds and flower bracts. Thirsty travellers knew to seek out this tree to collect water. Ravenala madagascariensis is a stunning tropical plant and would act well as a feature plant, or as back drop for other tropical plants. It is often used to line driveways and property entries, for which the fan shape lends itself very well. Plants for sale: 50-60cm tall. These plants are best in the ground, they do not look their best in pots as they are so fast growing. These are not the most beautiful plants, but they are extremely hardy and fully ready to go into the ground and take off. Good root systems!

Cinnamon Myrtle is a fantastic plant to grow. It's not too picky in its requirements, and although it prefers adequate water while it's establishing itself, it's quite drought hardy once establish. This small tree would make a beautiful canopy for your garden, especially combined with some taller foliage plants like the Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolai) or with colourful Gingers underneath.
How to grow Cinnamon Myrtle (Backhousia myrtifolia)
The Cinnamon Myrtle is not a picky plant. It will grow in just about any soil, from sandy to clay, however I recommended providing it with fertile, well-draining soil. Add good amounts of organic fertiliser regularly, which is not too high in Phosphorus (something Australian Native Plants can be sensitive to).

A less tongue twisting name for this plant is “Ox Blood Ginger”, so called because the undersides of this Spiral Ginger’s leaves are bright, startling red. It makes a wonderful contrast with the dark green of the upper leaves, and when it is in flower this Costus is exceptional. It is a lovely plant to have in your garden, and will add colour to your corners.Subtropical to tropical climates. 0.5-1m tall.
We don't supply coconuts at the moment, this info is for reference only. Bronze to red coloured fruit. Dwarf Coconuts can flower in their 3rd year in ideal conditions, and only grow 5-12m tall. They are suitable as indoor plants for 18-24 months.
Dracaena marginata, or Red Edge Dragon Tree, grows to aprox 5m tall. It can easily be maintained at any height by pruning the tops. Wherever you prune a cane, multiple canes will re-shoot, creating a beautiful bushy plant. It is one of the very best indoor plants, and looks great in a pot. Plant them with 3 or more in a pot to develop a nice, ‘full’ looking plant. It develops Cordyline-like canes, with tufts of sword-like foliage. Foliage is green with red margins. Not only is it great indoors, it also fares very well out in the garden, in full sun to part shade.
