Saribus rotundifolia is a beautiful palm, native to SE Asia, it is one of the more common landscape plants over there but it is seen less often in Australia.
Although the Footstool Palm is from the tropics it has successfully been grown in sub-tropical and even warm temperate areas. The leaves are used in the Phillipines for thatching and food wrapping.
It is important to provide a shady, sheltered spot while young but the Footstool palm will enjoy plenty of sun once it is well established and adequate humidity is provided. It makes for an amazing indoor potted palm and is very popular for its stunning foliage. Saribus rotundifolia is a fast growing palm and if conditions are right and planted outside - a 6 foot high palm is possible in around 3 years. It is not frost tolerant. A strong beautiful palm will emerge in rich soils but is also very tolerant to soils that may not be the best.
Common Names include:
Fan palm, Table palm, Serdang palm, Java fan palm, Footstool palm, Anahaw palm.
