Heliconia Sassy - Heliconia psittacorum
Heliconia plants are native to South and Central America as well as some Pacific islands, and their beautiful flowers and ease of growing makes them very popular all over the world.
The flowers of Psittacorum Sassy are a multitude of colours, ranging from pale green to magenta on the bracts, while the petals themselves are bright orange with dark green tips.
This spectacular plant is often called “parrot’s beak” because of its wonderful blooms. Sassy can grow between 1m and 1.5m tall.
Although quite drought hardy, this Heliconia looks best with regular watering. Rich, nutrient filled soil is the ideal for a happy Heliconia, and although they like to be kept on the wetter side of damp, the soil must also drain well to prevent standing water and root rot.
Partial shade to full sun will keep your Heliconia happy. As long as the soil is good and they are kept warm, you can grow Heliconia Sassy indoors in a pot or planted out in your garden.
An all purpose organic plant feed will benefit your Heliconia. We apply a good dose of chook pellet (such as Organic Xtra or Rooster Booster) every 2 months, and apply liquid seaweed & fertiliser tea every 2-3 weeks. Heliconia's are big feeders - keep up the organic food to keep them looking nice and green. Mulch deeply.
Being native to warm countries, your Heliconia will benefit from being kept nice and toasty. It doesn’t have to be placed in the blazing sunshine to thrive, but it will like to be kept tropical.
These gorgeous plants can be grown indoors or out, and are highly prized as cut flowers because they last so well-and are stunningly beautiful!
