Taro - Bun Long is a tropical perennial plant native to Asia and India. It is a vigorous, fast growing plants which is grown for its edible tuber. Taro is best grown in a warm, frost free position. In warm parts of the country it can be planted year round, but in cooler parts it's best to plant in spring. Taro performs best with plenty of water.

Taro - Chinese Taro - "Bun Long variety"

Taro (Colocasia esculenta) is a tropical perennial plant native to Asia, the South pacific and India. It is a vigorous, fast growing plant which is grown for its edible tuber.

Bun long Variety is popular in Australia and very palatable.  The tuber can grow up to a foot long and produces a beautiful creamy flesh that is easily digested.

The tuber can be prepared similar to potato; boiled, baked etc. Leaves are also edible. The leaves and plant tuber must be cooked and not eaten raw.  It is best peeled under running water.

Growing Taro Plants

Taro is best grown in a warm, frost free position. In warm parts of the country it can be planted year round, but in cooler parts it's best to plant in spring. 

Taro grows best in a well draining but rich soil and needs plenty of water.  It is one of few plants that will grow in flooded conditions and it is sometimes planted as a decorative "water plant".
