About Galangal Plants
Galangal Plants are part of the Ginger family Zingiberaceae, which also includes, amongst others, the Ginger plants Alpinia, Hedychium, Curcuma and Zingiber. They are grown for their culinary, decorative and medicinal uses. Galangal is a fantastic, useful plant. They grow happily in the garden with little maintenance, they look great with their lush green foliage and yellow flowers, AND fresh Galangal for cooking!
About Galangal rhizomes
Galangal grows from underground rhizomes (root stems). You can cut pieces of rhizomes as you need it in the kitchen, and the plant itself will happily keep growing.
The Rhizomes are very hard and they’re not easy to cut. I generally use a serrated knife to saw my way through the root, or sometimes secateurs if I can see a rhizome from above the soil and know where to snip.
Galangal has a stronger taste than normal, common Ginger.
