Silk Handkerchief Tree - Maniltoa lenticellata
The spectacular Maniltoa lenticellata is a flowering tropical tree in the Fabaceae family and is a prized and sought after garden tree. Native to tropical northern Queensland, part of the Torres Strait and New Guinea, they can grow very large but Maniltoa lenticellata usually reaches 10–12 m tall.
An amazing display is formed by new leaves which fold inside the red bracts and then are released in an incredible "silk handkerchief " display of pink / white.
An incredible tree for the garden, it also produces creamy white and fruit scented flowers which appear in north Queensland in early summer.
Growing your Maniltoa Lenticellata
This tree is native to the tropics and although hardy, it is not suitable for areas subject to cold dry wind or frosts, it will appreciate a subtropical / tropical climate and adequate humidity. Plant in a rich free draining soil, fertile loam is ideal. Water moderately. Will grow quite quickly once established.
