Giant Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia nicolai
Lush foliage plant from Natal, South Africa. Tall, striking banana like foliage growing up to 6m high and 4m wide.
This plant resmembles Ravenala madagascariensis in its arrangement.
It is evergreen, with multiple stems that form a dense clump. Very hardy with large dramatic leaves for a true tropical effect. Huge flowers resemble birds’ heads and can be used in floral arrangements.
Ideal for creating shade along a rural driveway or as a centre piece, even in exposed positions. Protection from wind will however, keep the foliage looking good. Flowers are eye-catching, white and blue.
Fast growing and easy care, mulch garden specimens, provide water when required and slow release fertilizer in spring and summer.
NOTE: This plant needs space if planted in the ground, roots can be aggressive, keep away from paths, pipes, pools and buildings etc.
These plants also are great as potted plants, they should be watered only when dry.
In Australia it will grow as far south as Melbourne, but ensure it the position is frost-free. Grow in full sun to part shade.
