Garcinia livingstonei - Imbe
Also known as African mangosteen, lowveld mangosteen, Livingstone's garcinia or imbe. A species of Garcinia, it is native to a wide area of tropical Africa.
It is an evergreen small ornamental tree and a traditional food plant in Africa. It earns its place in any warm sub-tropical garden. It can grow to 6-18m tall and resembles a stunning modern sculpture, with branches growing at right angles with whorls of unique blue/green leaves!!
The unusual structure of the tree alone, makes it a worthwhile garden specimen and it grows quite slowly and so can be managed in a small garden. The flowers are produced in clusters on the stems of the plant! The fruit is a small and bright orange and quite edible. Pleasantly sweet, yet acidic, mostly eaten fresh off the tree or used in drinks. Female trees will produce a few fruits but if you want to guarantee lots of fruiting, plant a few to increase the chances of having male and female trees.
This tree prefers deep sandy soil, in less ideal soil it will not grow as big.
The Imbe is known to be sensitive to cold, but often survives floods and hot, dry conditions.
