Dragon fruit offers may health benefits, as well as being full of vitamins and minerals, the seeds (which are unnoticable - like kiwi) contain the Omega oils your body craves. Diabetics love them because of the low sugar content and fibre which means a low glycaemic index.
The fibre in the dragonfruit is also great for the digestive system, it keeps things running smoothly :)
Growing your Dragon fruit:
When you recieve your cutting you see that there is an arrow on it showing which is the top! I recommend you plant your cutting in a pot of well draining mix rich in organic material and allow it to grow roots before planting out in the garden. Do not plant deeper than 1 inch and tie cutting to a stick for support. Water once a week, approx 1/2 cup around the roots. Dragonfruit are susceptaible to rot if over watered. Soon you will have roots and a new shoot! Most of the growth occurs in Spring and Summer so if you buy a cutting in Winter you may have to wait for some action! Encourage one strong shoot upwards and nip off shoots that grow outwards. Once the plant reaches the desired height then allow it to branch.
Once your plant is growing strong, plant in the garden in full sun to partial shade. It will need a VERY strong support, if you give your dragon organics and mulch it will grow well and become very heavy. We grow ours up heavy poles with supports and a tire on top, other people grown them on a strong fence or trellis.
Follow this and you should have flowers and fruit in 18months.
Ongoing Dragon fruit care:
Dragon fruit a pretty low mantainence, keep up the organic material and mulch. Don't overwater = Rot. Dragons do tend to get orange spots from time to time it is very common and doesn't cause any harm - it can be controlled with a spray of 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1 litre of water a few times a year or you can buy an organic product called Eco-carb which works very well.
Plants on offer: Cutting approx 20-30cm long - A Self pollinating variety producing sweet firm white flesh.
