Yellow Jaboticaba (Myrciaria glomerata)
Many people maybe familiar with the purple or regular jaboticaba (Myrciaria cauliflora) but the yellow Jaboticaba or Jabuticaba is still relatively rare in fruit tree collections.
Very popular in its native home of Brazil where it is also known as a tropical apricot, this sweet yellow fruited plant is also very ornamental and makes a great hedge with its multiple fine limbs. If left to grow this evergreen tree will reach up to 6-8 metres, again a very attractive tree.
This plant is is known by a variety of names so is often confused: Plinia glomerata, Myrciaria glazioviana, Eugenia cabelluda, Eugenia tomentosa, Myrciaria glomerata, Paramyrciaria glomerata
The yellow jaboticaba is best grown in a tropical climate but will tolerate temperatures down to -3C. It should be planted in full sun to partial shade in moist, well drained, fertile soil. In the right conditions you can expect fruit in approx 2 years.
Care for your yellow jaboticaba by ensuring that you keep it moist. These trees do not like to be too dry, several applications a year of balanced organic fertiliser is recommended for earlier fruit production.
