Tamarind Tree - Tamarindus indica
The Tamarind tree most likely originated in Tropical Africa and although widely grown India is the largest producer of Tamarind.
The Tamarind tree is leguminous tree and produces a pod containing seeds that is surrounded by an edible reddish brown pulp that is uniquely sweet / sour and quite delicious.
This pulp can be enjoyed from the ripe pods or scrapped out to use in many different cuisines, curries, chutneys and sweets.
The Tamarind is a beautiful spreading tree with a dense, lush foliage and will reach up to 12-18 metres in the right conditions.
As a tropical tree it is frost sensitive but it does have a high resistance to dought and salt spray so will suit frost free coastal positions.
It prefers an acidic soil, clay, loan or sandy.
The Tamarind is both beautiful and productive.
