Purple Wreath Vine , Queens Wreath (Petrea Volubilis)
Stunning and strong growing, this evergreen vine produces masses of purples flowers through summer. It is a wonderful alternative to Wisteria in the subtropical and tropic climate and probably one of the best purple flowering vines for the climate.
Petrea is quite unusual, in that it has strong papery leaves that contrast with the delicate sprays of purple flowers.
It is best growing over a trellis, an arch, gateway or fence for support.
As it is a strong grower, it it perfect for covering areas that you would rather not view or creating shade on the side of a verandah.
An interesting way to grow it is in a large container, pushing the vines back into the plant so they create a rounded shrub with a strong structure.
This vine prefers semi shade to full sun and fertile, well drained soil. Once established, it will tolerate dry spells, even if fully stressed it will usually grow back after the rains come.
