Mauritius Hemp (Furcrea foetida Medio Picta)
About Mauritius Hemp plants
Furcrea foetida Medio Picta is a beautiful succulent from Central America. It has long leaves, similar to Agave plants, with amazing colour which would provide an eye catching feature in the garden. Leaves are variegated, white with green stripes and outlines.
Furcrea foetida Medio Picta grows to approximately 1.5m tall and wide, and does not produce a trunk. The foliage doesn’t have any spikes or sharp edges and is therefore excellent for use around path ways and gardens. It will provide colour year round in the garden!
It is excellent for use in tropical and subtropical gardens, pots and containers. It is best grown in full sun to light shade, in a well draining soil. The Mauritius Hemp is very drought hardy when it is established, and is also believed to handle light frost. It would need protection for any prolonged frost, or deep frost.
Growing Mauritius Hemp plants
The Mauritius Hemp (furcrea foetida Medio-Picta) can be grown in pots or in the garden. Their mature size is 1.5m x 1.5m, absolutely stunning. I prefer growing my Furcreas in the garden, as they don't seem to appreciate root disturbance that much.
They grow a big root system which makes them very drought hardy, but roots are quite fine to take up all the moisture. They are not invasive in any way, and do not damage pavements or walls.
The Mauritius Hemp will grow fine in full sun, however sometimes it is good to provide a little bit of protection while they are young, just to get them used to it.
I put mine straight in the garden, in amongst other plants (which it will eventually outgrow), so they provide some initial protection, and it gives the plant a chance to settle in and find its feet.
Furcrea Medio-Picta grows faster in the garden from my experience, but can certainly be grown in pots. For the size we sell, I would plant them in 140-200mm pots. Nice, well draining potting mix.
