Kapok Tree - Ceiba pentandra
The amazing Kapok tree towers over all other trees in the tropical forests of Central and South America.
These trees grow so large in their native home that they famously support an incredible eco-system of plants and wildlife. This majestic tree will grow 50m plus and has distinctive bumpy spines on the trunk that is otherwise smooth. Huge buttresses emerge in time to stabilise this giant which can reach 3metres across.
The Kapok tree, apart from being a emergent tree in the forest, produces large seed pods full of fluffy fibre.
In south-east Asia the tree is cultivated for its bouyant timber and cotton like fibre that is used as stuffing and its insulating properties.
Kapok silk is a very useful nature fibre.
This majestic tree is well suited to parks, gardens, bush blocks, permaculture blocks or as a farm tree.
If you have room, grow a forest giant and your own natural fibre!
Also known as Java cotton, Java kapok, Silk cotton tree or Ceiba.
