Devil's Ivy - Epipremnum aureum aka Golden pothos - Scindapsus aures
Devil’s Ivy, or Epipremnum Aureum, goes by many names and is a variegated plant with attractive leaves in varying shades of green and gold. Despite the name (and despite a few old wives tales about bad luck) Devil’s Ivy is a popular houseplant as it requires little maintenance and keeps its variegated colour despite poor conditions.
In the wild Epipremnum can grow huge leaves and up to 40 feet long-but as a potted plant it will trail to only about 8 feet.
The soil must be well draining, and Devil’s Ivy will respond better to under rather than over watering. You can improve the soil quality by adding a mix of organic nutrients to give Devil’s Ivy a bit of a boost. Epipremnum can also be grown hydroponically, in just water with added nutrients.
Able to cope in most conditions from very low light and humidity, to stronger sunny positions with more moisture, this easygoing plant is great for filtering the air in stuffy offices or houses. It seems to respond well to neglect, making it a very popular houseplant for the less green fingered folks!
A light feed of organic all round fertiliser will benefit your Devil’s Ivy, but there’s no need to do it regularly-just often enough to keep the plant ticking over, or if you see it looking sickly.
Temperatures over 10 degrees C are best for Epiremnum, but it will survive in most temperatures as long as it is not exposed to long periods of extreme heat or cold. Higher, rather than lower levels of humidity will benefit your Devil’s Ivy.
Devil’s Ivy is poisonous to cats and dogs, so be sure to keep your furry friends away from you leafy one!
