Carob Tree - Ceratonia siliqua

The Carob tree is a flowering evergreen tree widely grown as an ornamental plant in temperate regions around the world.

It is used in xeriscape landscape design for gardens and parks as it develops a beautiful sculpted trunk and a shady pyramid shape as it branches out.  It can also be pruned to a tall screening hedge.

It is also widely cultivated for its edible pods.  The dried and toasted pod is crushed and used as a chocolate substitute.  The pods are naturally sweet and can be picked and chewed straight from the tree.  Yum!

Growing the Carob Tree

The carob tree grows up to 15 m, is drought tolerant, tough and frost-tolerant to around -7C.  Tolerant of most soils, it prefers sandy loam, not waterlogged soil.  Also reasonably tolerant of saline soil.  Temperate, subtropical and tolerant of humid coastal conditions, this tree is a survivor in our tough climate.

Carob trees are dioecious and some are hermaphroditic, so if a pod harvest is important then multiple trees should be planted to increase the chances of producing male and female trees / flowers.
