Candlenut Tree - Aleurites moluccana

Wow, what an amazing tree!  Incredibly useful as well as being tough and a very attractive shade tree.

The Candle nut tree is often considered a native but really it is unknown exactly where it originated.  It is grown in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world.  It is known by many names including Candleberry, Indian walnut, Nuez de la India, Kukui nut, Kemiri and Buah keras

Related to the macadamia nut, the plentiful oily nuts are grown commercially overseas and are used mainly in Indonesia and Malaysian cooking, like a macadamia nut substitute.  In the Phillippines it is known as lumbang.  Unlike the macadamia though, it cannot be eaten raw, it will make you sick.  However, once cooked it is quite delicious.  It is important not to overdo it though as it does have a laxative effect which could be quite unpleasant.

Another use for the candlenut is lighting the night!  A nut will burn for about 15minutes or string them onto a wire to keep a torch burning for much longer!

Pounding up the nuts to make a paste and using as a shampoo or conditioner, it is said to promote healthy growth of hair!

The rich oil from the nut is used by the Australian aboriginals and Polynesians to waterproof and preserve their nets and bags!

Indigenous cultures consider every part of the tree to have medicinal uses, even the bark is said to be good at removing warts!

We have a couple of Candlenut trees growing and they have required very little attention apart from preparing the soil with some organic matter and then mulching them once planted.  They like well drained soil and ours are still looking great in full sun in this hot dry weather.  They are a big tree reaching around 20m so make sure you have plenty of room for it to grow and spread its lovely shade branches.
