Native only to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, India and Sri Lanka, Bauhinia tomentosa, the yellow bauhinia or yellow bell orchid tree, is a species of legume in the Fabaceae family.
Yellow bauhinia is a beautiful lush tree reaching a height of up to 4m. The flowers are rich in pollen and nectar and are very attractive to wildlife. According to wikipedia, the roots and bark are used in traditional medicine in Africa and India.
Established trees can tolerate a moderate amount of frost, but the seedlings and younger plants should be protected.
Full sun and moderate amount of water is required. Plant in well drained soil rich in organic matter, mulch is recommended to ensure adequate moisture is retained.
Plants available: Strong young seedling trees up to 40cm tall and branching. Looking very nice.
