Jaboticaba (Myrciara cauliflora)
This native of Brazil is a truely amazing tree! I love cauliflorous trees (trees that grow their fruit on their trunks), well, just because it is so unusual!
This tree is a slow grower but totally worth the wait and a great addition to smaller gardens due to its compactness and abundant fruit. It has attractive pale, peeling bark, and for the main feature, these amazing sweet tree grapes!
Small white flowers are followed by deep purple to black fruits which attach directly to the branches! Fruit is very similar to grapes with colourless, sweet pulp, although I find the skin is tougher and features a tannin bite!
Fruits are most often used in jam and wine but I enjoy them fresh once fully ripe. They can also be frozen whole and served with ice cream or salad.
Grow in fertile, moist, well draining soil in full sun to part shade. Best soil is slightly acidic, Ph being 5.5-6.5. Frost hardy to approx -3 once established. Water regularly is the secret and fertilise to get lots of fruit. Now, you are not going to get fruit for a while, approx 5 years but when you do, you can expect 5-6 crops a year.
Suitable for growing in large pots and containers.
