Still looking for Christmas Presents?

How about a living gift?  I must admit I am not the happiest Christmas shopper.  Don't get me wrong, I love to find the perfect gift, but it just seems harder and harder each year.  When I buy a gift, I put lots of thought into it.  Is this something they will treasure, use or display proudly or will they just quietly put it away to re-gift the next year?  I want my presents to be memorable, special, cherished.

Have you considered a plant this Christmas?  A plant is a wonderful living gift that will continue to bring happy thoughts throughout the year and for many years to come.  Perhaps we can provide the plant and you a beautiful planter?  Perhaps your loved one is an avid gardener and nothing would surprise them more than a gift wrapped box with botanical delights!

Bush Treasures - The Gumby Gumby Tree

There is something to be said for planting a native tree!

Over generations they have uniquely adapted to their environment in such a way that success is almost guaranteed.  Being around for a long time, the native trees have revealed their unique properties to Australia's Aboriginal people - who discovered the use, healing properties and food potential of many, many plants and trees and passed down the knowledge through word of mouth.

The Gumby Gumby Tree is one of those trees.  It sports very attractive, weeping willow-like foliage and is slow growing, making this tree suitable for parks and gardens.

Tropical plants and tropical gardens for hot, dry climates

There’s a tropical plant to suit every garden in Australia and I’ve compiled a list of some of our tropical plants which will thrive in hot climates. Hot climates can be a challenge for the gardener, unless you want to grow a rock garden or cacti garden!

Tropical gardens in hot, dry climates

The very hottest we’ve ever experienced on our property here was last year, when it hit 41.6 degrees. I know it gets much hotter than that in many other places of Australia. Rain is scarce here, and generally comes in the form of a sky-sized bucket, which tips 800mm onto the land in 3 days. Then, nothing for the rest of year.

Shady Characters-Shade Loving Plants

Shady Characters-Plants for Shade

Although all plants need the light of the sun to photosynthesise, there are some which enjoy it more and some which prefer a bit of a darker, shadier position in order to survive. These plants can be striking and gorgeous in their own right, and are far from shrinking violets!

Beallara Peggy Ruth Orchid

Orchids are a beautiful, striking plant to grow and will be a talking point wherever you grow them. With the right conditions it is possible to grow orchids out of doors, but most are kept as indoor plants-because, let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to look at those gorgeous flowers all the time?

Orchidaceae are a truly enormous family of plants, and they have been around for a very long time-possibly even dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. In their natural environment orchids are Epiphytic, meaning that they grow on trees. (You’ll be pleased to know that you can buy specialist orchid soil, you don’t have to grow a forest just to grow an orchid!)

Growing information & plant care for our Mother of the Jungle Garden Plant Pack

I spoke to the nicest lady on the phone a couple of days ago who was interested in our Mother of the Jungle garden plant pack. She mentioned she is just starting out with her garden, and would like to receive some information on the plants included in the pack, where to plant them, how to grow them - basically any information I could think of. It made me realize that this information would be helpful to a lot of gardeners thinking of buying this pack to kick-start their garden; so here we go!

  1. Our Mother of the Jungle plant pack is our biggest instant garden pack. It includes nearly 50 plants for only $395 with free post, suited for subtropical and tropical climates, and other gardens which do not receive a lot of cold weather or have protection.
  2. For more information, including more photo's, just click on the titles below to go to the full plant description.
  3. You are very welcome to alter the pack to suit, send me your list via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or give me a call on 0478229709 to discuss.
  4. Please note that if one of the plants included is out of stock, we will replace it with something comparable. If this is not okay with you, please leave a 'no substitutes' note in the comment section with your order.

Description of the plants included & How to grow them

  • 2x Giant Bird of Paradise (Strelizia nicolai)

  • Very fast growing plant for full sun to part shade. Suitable for a quick screen, feature plant of pot. Originally from South Africa. Grows around 12m tall and 4m wide. Evergreen, with multiple stems that form a dense clump. Big, banana like foliage. Very forgiving, will handle any soil. Handles drought & wet soils. Also suitable as indoor plant. Best sheltered from strong wind as the foliage shreds easily; this doesn't hurt the plant but can be a bit unsightly. Mulch well, and water regularly at least for a start.
  • Responds well to a good dose of fertilizer. We use organic only, which you could apply every 2-3 months, but check the instructions on the bag to check application rates.
  • 2x Orange Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae)

  • Beautiful plant from South Africa with orange, birds-head-shaped flowers. The warmer the climate the more flowers you will get. Broad foliage. Grows up to 2m high and 1m wide. Great planted in a group, or on its own as a feature. Also suitable for pots. Best in rich soil, mulch well and apply organic fertilizer regularly. Full sun to part shade. If you receive very hot, burning sun, it's best to plant in a position where the sun is filtered at the hottest part of the day. Enjoys regular watering. Water frequently during hot times, less in winter. Easily damaged by frost, but would recover if the ground doesn't freeze.
