Still looking for Christmas Presents?

How about a living gift?  I must admit I am not the happiest Christmas shopper.  Don't get me wrong, I love to find the perfect gift, but it just seems harder and harder each year.  When I buy a gift, I put lots of thought into it.  Is this something they will treasure, use or display proudly or will they just quietly put it away to re-gift the next year?  I want my presents to be memorable, special, cherished.

Have you considered a plant this Christmas?  A plant is a wonderful living gift that will continue to bring happy thoughts throughout the year and for many years to come.  Perhaps we can provide the plant and you a beautiful planter?  Perhaps your loved one is an avid gardener and nothing would surprise them more than a gift wrapped box with botanical delights!

Bush Treasures - The Gumby Gumby Tree

There is something to be said for planting a native tree!

Over generations they have uniquely adapted to their environment in such a way that success is almost guaranteed.  Being around for a long time, the native trees have revealed their unique properties to Australia's Aboriginal people - who discovered the use, healing properties and food potential of many, many plants and trees and passed down the knowledge through word of mouth.

The Gumby Gumby Tree is one of those trees.  It sports very attractive, weeping willow-like foliage and is slow growing, making this tree suitable for parks and gardens.

How to grow Heliconia

Did you know - That heliconias are related to bananas?

Sourced from the shady lush forests of Central and South America, there are now over 200 recognised species of Heliconia and many more cultivars.  Spectacular tropical plants, they vary considerably in their habit and flowers.  Some grow upright, others hang like a pendant. The majority of Heliconia flaunt bold and extravagant shades of reds and yellows, with luscious green foliage. They grow from an underground system of roots known as ‘rhizomes’. These rhizomes can be used to grow more Heliconia, providing they are well looked after. The size a Heliconia will grow depends on the species and ranges from around 60cm - 5 metres!

How should I look after my Heliconia?

Heliconias as a species grow in a wide variety of habitats worldwide including cool altitudes to warm humid tropical forest.  Looking after them is pretty straightforward. They love humid and warm climates – the heat does wonders for their growth!   They prefer temperatures over 20 degrees, although there are some varieties that will perform well in cooler areas, as far down the coast as Sydney.  Feed and water them regularly, but do not let them get waterlogged, as this puts their roots at risk of damage.
